Il fucile mitragliatore automatico M1928, progettato da John Taliaferro Thompson nel 1918, fu adottato nel 1938 dalle Forze armate degli Stati Uniti, servendo durante la seconda guerra mondiale e più tardi nella guerra di Corea, così come nelle prime fasi della guerra del Vietnam. Era il favorito di soldati, criminali, polizia e civili per la sua ergonomia, le dimensioni compatte, l’affidabilità, l’elevata velocità di fuoco in modalità automatica e le sue munizioni .45 ACP. Aveva una rivista diritta con 20 cartucce o un caricatore a tamburo con 50-100 cartucce.
Ha acquisito cattiva reputazione durante il periodo del proibizionismo o legge secca negli Stati Uniti (1920-1933). Appariva normalmente nei media del tempo, quando era l’arma preferita dai gangster. Doveva guadagnare soprannomi come “Trench Broom”, “Trench Sweeper”, “Chicago Typewriter”, “Chicago Piano”, “Chicago Style” o “The Chopper”.
Da allora ha guadagnato popolarità tra i collezionisti per la sua importanza storica.
