Replica of the Desert Eagle pistol, made in Israel until 2009 and later produced in the United States.
It was originally designed by Bernard C. White of Magnum Research Inc., based in the United States, which filed a US patent application in the early 1980s.
The company then developed and holds the patent for the original Desert Eagle design, later refined by IMI (Israel Military Industries).
Production moved to the Saco Defense plant in Maine from 1995 to 2000, but returned to Israel when Saco was acquired by General Dynamics.
The pistol works differently from most semi-automatic pistols, which are generally short-recoil or blowback operated: the gas-operated mechanism used in the Desert Eagle is more common in rifles. Its rotating bolt and locking mechanism closely resemble those of the M16 rifle series.
The advantage of gas operation is that it allows far more powerful cartridges than those designed for conventional semi-automatic pistols, letting the Desert Eagle compete in a market previously held by Magnum revolvers.
To change the chambered cartridge you simply fit a barrel of the right calibre and swap the bolt and magazine, so the conversion can easily be carried out in the field.
Since the .50 AE cartridge has a rim of the same diameter as the .44 Magnum, converting between these two calibres only requires changing the barrel and magazine.
The most common barrel length is 6 inches (152 mm), but 8-, 10- and 14-inch barrels (203, 254 and 356 mm) are also available, though less common. Mark XIX barrels have an integral base for mounting a scope, which makes fitting one quite simple.
Like many other semi-automatic pistols, the Desert Eagle has a removable magazine, holding nine rounds of .357 Magnum, eight of .44 Magnum or seven of .50 AE. The barrel has polygonal rifling. The pistol is mainly used for sport shooting, target shooting and hunting, and its use remains limited to these fields because of the following drawbacks:
large size;
heavy weight;
considerable recoil and muzzle flash;
very loud report;
high cost.
