Historical background:
The Parabellum pistol, or Model 1908 (P08), popularly known as the Luger, is a recoil-operated semi-automatic pistol that survived the restrictions of the Treaty of Versailles. Instead of the external slide found on almost all other semi-automatic pistols, it uses a toggle-joint action.
It was designed by Georg Luger in 1898 and produced by the German arms maker Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken (DWM) from around 1900. Over its long life the Luger P08 passed through the hands of several manufacturers, who built more than one million units of this legendary pistol, a milestone in the history of small arms.
Although the first models were chambered in 7.65×21 Parabellum, the 1908 model is famous as the pistol for which the 9×19 Parabellum cartridge was developed. The name Parabellum comes from the Latin saying “Si vis pacem, para bellum” (“If you want peace, prepare for war”).
The Parabellum Luger became very popular through its use by Germany in the First and Second World Wars, and it remained a pistol highly prized by soldiers throughout the twentieth century.
