Historical background:
The M1 Garand was developed by gun designer John C. Garand from 1928. It was a gas-operated semi-automatic rifle fed by an en bloc clip holding 8 rounds of .30-06 Springfield; when the last round was fired, the empty clip was ejected automatically with a distinctive, easily recognised “ping”. With an effective range of about 550 m, good accuracy and rapid fire, it became one of the most effective rifles of the Second World War. The M1 was the first semi-automatic rifle in general use by US infantry, with more than 5,000,000 produced. Its simple design, which made it easy to clean and keep ready, its reliability and its firepower compared with its German and Japanese counterparts, which still used bolt-action rifles as standard, gave US soldiers a clear advantage in combat. General George Patton called the M1 Garand “the greatest battle implement ever devised”. It served the US armed forces for several decades: in the Second World War, the Korean War and, to a lesser extent, the Vietnam War. Other countries also adopted it, including West Germany, France, Japan and China, and it was used by guerrilla fighters in Latin America and during the Cuban Revolution.
