German MP40 Submachine Gun
Reproduction of a submachine gun made of metal and plastic, with a simulated loading and firing mechanism, removable magazine and adjustable leather sling.
The MP40 (Maschinenpistole 40) was designed by Heinrich Vollmer in 1940 to equip German soldiers with a compact automatic weapon.
It used 32-round 9 mm magazines and had an effective range of about 100-150 metres.
It was a very reliable gun and very cheap to produce. Thanks to its low rate of fire it had relatively mild recoil even in bursts, which made it more accurate at short range (urban areas, forests, etc.) than other submachine guns of the time, but less effective in open country because of its limited range; this was one of the reasons behind the design of the StG 44, the forerunner of modern assault rifles.
German MP40 Submachine Gun. This automatic submachine gun was widely used by German troops (usually officers, mechanised infantry and paratroopers) during the Second World War, the global conflict of 1939-1945 that involved most of the world's nations, including all the great powers, grouped into two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis powers.
It was the largest military conflict in history, in which the main participants placed their entire economic, military and scientific capacity at the service of the war effort, erasing the distinction between civilian and military resources.
By the end of the war about 1,047,000 had been built, thousands of which were captured by the Red Army.
It was also used by the French army in the Indochina conflict and later in the Korean and Vietnam wars.
